How Hemorrhoid Banding Works

What is hemorrhoid banding?
Hemorrhoid banding, also known as rubber band ligation, is a fast, highly effective, and minimally invasive outpatient procedure used to treat symptomatic internal hemorrhoids. It involves placing a tiny, tight rubber band at the base of the hemorrhoid to completely cut off its blood supply, causing the swollen tissue to safely shrink and detach.
During this quick in-office treatment, your gastroenterologist uses a specialized instrument to gently grasp the hemorrhoid and deploy the small rubber band around its base. Within a few days to a week, the banded hemorrhoid shrivels, dies, and naturally passes out of your body during a normal bowel movement, usually without you even noticing.
The procedure is virtually painless and typically takes less than five minutes. Because the rubber band is placed high up in the rectum where there are very few pain-sensing nerves, patients do not require any fasting, anesthesia, or sedation.
