Know Your Risk

Screening guidelines changed in 2021. You may qualify sooner than you think.

The American Cancer Society now recommends screening starting at age 45 for average-risk adults, not 50. Talk to our team if any of these apply to you:

  • You are 45 or older
  • You have a parent, sibling, or child who had colorectal cancer or polyps
  • You have had inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's or ulcerative colitis)
  • You've noticed blood in your stool, changes in bowel habits, or unexplained weight loss
  • You've never had a colonoscopy or it's been more than 10 years
  • You prefer a private, at-home option before committing to a full procedure

Not sure if you're due?

Our team reviews your history, age, and risk factors and recommends the right screening option for you. No pressure, no guesswork.

How It Works

Three steps from phone call to results

We keep the process clear and low-stress, whether you choose a colonoscopy or a stool-based test at home.

1

Consultation & Risk Review

We start by looking at your health history and family background to pick the screening method that fits your situation. Colonoscopy, COLOGUARD, or FIT test, we walk you through the difference.

2

Your Screening Appointment

Colonoscopies are performed in our Katy office with sedation so you won't feel a thing. Stool tests go home with you and ship back by mail. Either way, it's over fast.

3

Results & Next Steps

We explain your results clearly and tell you exactly what, if anything, needs follow-up. No confusing medical jargon, just a clear answer.

Why Gastro Health & Nutrition

What sets our Katy team apart

We've built our practice around making screening easier to say yes to.

Caught early, treated easier

Finding a polyp during a routine colonoscopy takes about 30 minutes and prevents cancer from forming. Waiting until symptoms show up often means a harder conversation about treatment.

Two screening paths, your choice

Not everyone wants a colonoscopy. We offer stool-based home tests for patients who qualify. Our GI team helps you pick based on your risk level, not just what's easiest to schedule.

GI specialists, not generalists

Your colonoscopy is performed by a board-certified gastroenterologist who focuses on this every day. That matters when someone is looking for polyps with a 5 mm margin.

Same-week appointments

We don't put patients on a 6-month waiting list. Appointments at our Katy office often open within the same week. Call us and find out what's available.

Insurance handled upfront

Our front desk team checks your coverage before your appointment, so there are no surprises on the bill. Most major insurance plans cover preventive colonoscopies at 100%.

Five locations across the Gulf Coast

Katy, Cypress, Sugar Land, Portland, and Victoria. If Katy doesn't work for your schedule, one of our other offices is likely close to home or work.

FAQ

Common questions about colorectal cancer screening

If something isn't covered here, call us at 281-758-8383 and we'll give you a straight answer.

Colorectal cancer starts in the colon or rectum, often from small polyps that grow over years. Most people have no symptoms early on, which is why screening before age 45 matters. Your risk goes up with age, family history, inflammatory bowel disease, certain diets, and smoking.
A colonoscopy lets your doctor see the entire colon directly and remove any polyps during the same procedure. It's done in our office under sedation and takes about 30 minutes. Stool-based tests (like COLOGUARD or FIT) are done at home and mailed in. If they come back positive, a colonoscopy follows. Both are effective. Our team helps you decide which fits your situation.
If your colonoscopy results are normal, you typically won't need another one for 10 years. Stool tests are usually repeated every 1 to 3 years. If you had polyps removed, your doctor may recommend follow-up in 3 to 5 years. Your screening schedule depends on your specific results and risk factors.
Most major insurance plans, including Medicare, cover preventive colonoscopies at 100% with no out-of-pocket cost. Stool-based tests are also often covered. Our team checks your coverage before your appointment so you know what to expect. Call us at 281-758-8383 if you have questions about your specific plan.
You'll follow a clear liquid diet the day before and take a bowel prep solution that clears the colon. It's the part most people dread, but prep products have improved a lot. We'll send you detailed instructions and our staff is available to answer any questions beforehand. You'll need someone to drive you home after since you'll be sedated.
Symptoms include blood in the stool, persistent changes in bowel habits (like diarrhea or constipation lasting more than a few days), rectal bleeding, abdominal cramping, and unexplained weight loss. That said, many people with colorectal cancer have no symptoms at all in the early stages. Don't wait for symptoms to get screened.
